Description
Originally known as Granite Canyon, this route was one of the first standard gauge railroad tracks in the Colorado Rockies. Laid by the Colorado Midland Railway in 1897, the train carried ore to and from local mines as well as provided wildflower excursions for tourists.
Three tunnels blasted out of the granite for the train’s passage remain along this mostly shaded, narrow dirt road, which is often washboard-rough in the dry months, and snow-packed or icy in winter. In some places, and certainly through the tunnels, there is room for only one vehicle.
Black soot from the trains of the Midland Railroad is still visible inside the tunnels. 8,500 feet in elevation
